POWER YOGA CLASSES

TUESDAYS 7:30 – 8:30pm ALL LEVELS * JUBILEE HALL | Horton Road | SOUTH DARENTH | DA4 9AX * £10 – DROP IN PRICE

POWER YOGA – A SCIENCE BASED APPROACH

PLEASE NOTE there are NO CLASSES on 11th AUGUST 2026

As we age, it’s super important that we keep ourselves as strong and flexible as we can – as both of these contribute to a better quality of life.  And YOGA – especially modern fitness based Yoga can help us achieve this.

A SCIENCE BASED APPROACH TO YOGA – means that my classes are mainly focused on this more modern take on yoga – fusing the traditional elements – such as the conscious breath and the poses (asanas) with powerful and challenging flowing sequences specifically designed to increase your strength, flexibility and balance in both the body and mind.  We use our own body weight, so there aren’t any machines or weights to get to grips with.  All you need to bring is a mat (I’ll even lend you one if you haven’t got one yet!).

It’s an ALL LEVELS class and you don’t need to be strong, flexible or able to stand on one leg to join!  I encourage all my students to work WITH their bodies by offering lots of variations and options so that you can work at your own level as you gradually increase your fitness and strength. What you do need is to be WILLING to give it go!  You’ll probably suck at it for the first few weeks, but you’ll be surprised how fast you can build up your strength and gain more movement and flexibility. You WILL find it challenging.  If it doesn’t challenge you – it won’t change you..

If you were looking for a class where you can just lie around on the floor and do a bit of gentle stretching – my classes are probably not for you!  However, if you want to really build up your strength, increase your range of movement, balance the body, keep your brain healthy AND learn how to focus, be in the moment, deal with stress and be in tune with your own body – then this class will give you all that and more.

YOGA PRACTICE – NOT PERFORMANCE!
The classes are very friendly and relaxed and it really doesn’t matter if you can’t reach as far up (or down) as you would like, if you wobble or even fall over in a one legged balance as it’s all part of the fun of learning and getting fitter.  I use a class structuring style called a Slow Build or Ladder Flow – which means that we revisit lots of the poses during the one class, adding on a bit more each time as we move through the asanas (poses) with a flowing motion, following the breath, firing up our core muscles, building heat, strength and focus.  There is some mat based work and the last five minutes is set aside for relaxation, but much of the class is standing.

MORE ABOUT VINYASA FLOW & ASHTANGA YOGA
The classes are based on a modern style of yoga called Vinyasa Flow which is the most popular style of yoga taught today, fused together with another modern style of yoga called Ashtanga  – also sometimes known as POWER YOGA. Both Vinyasa Flow and Ashtanga combine movement with breath – to create a flowing practice – almost like a moving meditation – as you move and breathe consciously through the various yoga postures. The class includes sun salutations, twisting movements as well as balancing postures.

Yoga is not just good for the body.  It’s also good for the BRAIN.  I include cross-crawl/cross lateral movements in the classes too – which use both sides of the body at the same time – such as right arm/left leg etc., and we do other movements that cross the central line of the body – thus creating new pathways between the right and left hemispheres of the brain, helping support brain health.  The classes also include core strengthening work, balancing postures and functional everyday movements as well as breathwork.  To read more about why BALANCE is important – click here.

If you’ve never really targeted strength, balance and flexibility before – it’s likely that you’ll be feeling it for the first few weeks – but honestly – stick with it.  You’ll be surprised how quickly you build up your strength and improve your balance and flexibility and the focus angle will really help with relieving stress.

COSTS: Class is £10 drop in or if you prefer to buy a block of classes as an incentive to come – you can buy a FIVE CLASS PASS for £50 – there is no EXPIRY date on the class passes.  You can pay with cash, bank transfer or Paypal.

You’ll need to bring a yoga mat, a blanket or a cushion and if you have blocks – that’s great!  Sometimes we use a strap – so a dressing gown tie or a belt or similar is a useful prop too.

GRAVITY YOGA & SCIENCE OF STRETCHING™
Targeted Flexibility Training

Science of Stretching (also known as Gravity Yoga) is a targeted mobility and flexibility training system, specifically designed to help restore the body to its full range of natural movement. If you have locked up hips, tight hamstrings and a stiff lower back – there’s a good chance that this programme can help you.

This programme works to help free up the body, restoring movements that have become harder or even impossible to do – mainly due to our sedentary, modern lifestyles and even modern fitness trends.

Science of Stretching/Gravity Yoga is recommended as a supplementary programme designed to fit in around and complement your existing exercise regime – so whatever you do – whether you’re a runner, a golfer, a cyclist, a martial artist or a cross fitter  – the whole programme is designed to support and enhance your performance at your chosen sport.  You’ll move better by regaining mobility and flexibility.  Even if you already practice Yoga, this programme can help you go deeper in your existing practice.

In a Science of Stretching/Gravity Yoga class there is no pushing or pulling or gripping – just long holds with your muscles under passive tension, as muscles stretch best when relaxed.  Once in a pose, we relax as much as possible, breathe into the stretch and let gravity do all the work for you – hence the name.

I mostly teach private clients and offer a FREE DISCOVERY CLASS  – which is 30 minutes – I will come to you, or we can do it online – so if you would like to improve YOUR flexibility, email me on: maria@dancegeneration.co.uk – to find out more.

VINYASA FLOW
I regularly hold Yoga Workshops introducing you to Vinyasa Flow Yoga, which is the most popular style of yoga taught today.  Right now – we don’t have any workshops planned – but please check back regularly for updates as I’m hoping to hold some in the New Year (2023)

Vinyasa Flow combines movement with breath – to create a flowing practice as you move through the various yoga postures.   This workshop will take you step by step through Sun Salutations as well as some standing balances, seated postures and twists.

Halfway through the workshop we normally break for a drink, a chat and some homemade cake, before we end the day with some relaxation, breathing practises & a short meditation.

A PERFECT way to spend an afternoon!

PRE BOOKING is recommended as spaces are limited!  You can pay by Bank Transfer or cash.  Call 07811 823467 or email:  maria@dancegeneration.co.uk

If you have attended one Workshop at full price – you may attend any of the others for HALF PRICE!

FUTURE WORKSHOP dates for 2024 – coming soon!
